Designed by Mima Architects, the Mima House started from the intention of planning a dwelling that responds directly to the lifestyle of our society.

Large windows on each elevation have wooden frames and hinge open as doors.

With customised plywood panels, which are provided separately to transform the windows into walls and to create privacy when necessary.

The Mima House construction was inspired by the traditional Japanese residential post-and-beam construction, which could be considered an inherent system of pre-fabrication. The regularised column spacing known as the ken and the infill elements such as shoji screens, fusuma panels and tatami mats, prefabricated by individual craftsmen in different locations of Japan were designed for precise assembly, like pieces of a puzzle.

Allowing the architecture of the Mima House to respond and adapt quickly to the life changes and ambitions from within.

The Mima House has a modular structure and can be divided into rooms with a grid of removable partitions.

The use of prefabricated construction methods, ensure quick production and low costs.

MIMA consists of a square post-and- beam structure completely glazed on all sides, subdivided by modular 1,5mx3m wooden frames.

MIMA houses come with additional plywood panels which can be placed on the inside and the outside of the building, for a replacement of any window by a wall in a matter of seconds. The inside is defined by a regular grid of 1,5m, whose intermediate lines leave gaps for internal walls to be added when needed.

In a matter of seconds, a subdivided space can be replaced by an open space or vice versa.

Each side of internal and external walls can have a different color/finishing, which can allow a dramatic change through simple wall rotation.

Despite its standardised construction methods, MIMA houses can be customised in so many ways, that you will rarely see two identical houses.

The 3D software developed by MIMA’s architects and software engineers allows a recognition of your land through Google Earth and generates an automatic 3D model for a realistic perception of the house and site.

This software allows for walking inside the house and defining the architectural finishes, external walls, internal divisions, materials and colors.

COST: A 36 sq.m. prefabricated house in Portugal costs about the same price to manufacture as a a mid-range family car.

Tearless teething?

We got this little necklace for our little girl and it arrived in the post about a week ago. Now I don’t think it is a miracle cure but I can tell you two things about it..

1. The moment we popped it on about 80% of the dribble cleared up

2. She has 3 teeth popping out as I type and we removed it yesterday when she went swimming and forgot to put it back on. Two hours later out came the Calpol, which we hadn’t used in the last 6 days.

Would I recommend..? I think I just did! See more at tearless teething

As our little girl is getting bigger by the second, I began looking around for something that could…. well measure her and measure up to her good taste (we can only hope)! This ruler height chart was just the thing….! At £25 it seem a bit rich .. until you remember that this is a timeless piece that will still be cool when they are a whole lot bigger….

I am very excited about these new baby grows and shirts I designed for my daughter Charlie, they were delivered through my door this am and I am super impressed with them…. They only took 5 months in the making (partially due to my little time guzzler), but were well worth the wait. The good people at spread shirts require me sell 10 before I get to upload some more fab designs. Vector vs Raster

There are two basic types of electronic image files: vector and raster (pixel-based)

Vector… is scalable and resolution independent, allowing the user to increase and decrease the size to any degree and while remaining crisp and sharp, both on-screen and in print. Vector art consist of lines, curves and shapes with editable attributes such as colour, fill, and outline.

Best for… type, line art and illustrations.

Formats… ai, eps, svg

Raster… is commonly known as bitmap and is composed of pixels in a grid. Pixels are tiny dots with an assigned colour value. These dots of colour come together to form the images you see. When increasing the size of a raster image the pixels defining the image can be increased in either number or size. The image will begin to lose detail and clarity when the pixels are spread over a larger area. Raster-based Images Are Resolution Dependent and measured in dpi (dots per inch) or ppi (pixels per inch. When printing raster images, your printer needs much more image data than a monitor. To render a bitmap image accurately, the typical desktop printer needs 300-600 dpi. The quality of the print increases when a higher resolution is used. Bitmaps cannot be scaled without the loss of quality to the image. Because raster images are resolution dependent, it’s difficult to increase or decrease their size without sacrificing the overall quality. The image may appear clear on-screen, but once printed the loss of quality is more apparent as the image may appear pixellated or blurry.
